Neon Engine
A modular, extensible open-source game engine in C++ with an OpenGL renderer, built on SDL2.
Neon, as in a[N]other [E]xtensible [O]pen-source e[N]gine, is a modular game engine written in C++. It started as a personal project and grew into an attempt at an engine that is easy to pick up without giving up the ability to reach in and change how things work.
The approach is to integrate proven open-source libraries rather than reinvent them, while keeping the architecture open enough that any piece can be swapped out.
What works today
- OpenGL rendering
- Windowing and input through SDL2
- Logging with spdlog
- Texture loading with stb
On the roadmap
- Vulkan and Metal backends, with DirectX as a possibility
- Physics and audio integration
- Scripting bindings for Lua, Rust, and Python
